Pretending you know what you're doing is almost the same as knowing...

One doesn't become extraordinary-one decides to accomplish extraordinary things.

So if you follow the facebook, or the twitter, you've probably seen me pimp this before (if you're on the facebook, these notes are syndicated from livejerbil).

I discovered Kickstarter.com last year when an indie filmmaker I follow was looking for some funding to complete a film he was working on. He linked to Kickstarter and as I like his work, I pitched in $20 towards the completion of his film. Since then, I've followed Kickstarter on Twitter, and occasionally they tweet about a project that piques my interest.

Well, "1024 bits of you and me" caught my eye. I'm not really sure WHY it did, but I liked the name, and it was art, so I checked it out.

Almost immediately, I fell in love with the concept of the project, and did the math, and decided to go for one of the lower levels of sponsorship. But then, the more I thought about it, the more excited I became about seeing this thing become reality. So I actually pitched in for the maximum (at the time) pledge, which was 16 paintings, or $160.

Now, the thing about Kickstarter is that they don't collect the money for the project unless it meets its minimum funding goal. So pledging $160 to a project that's trying to raise $10,240 isn't alot, and there's no guarantee that it'll actually get collected. But it gives you the ability to pledge money towards things you'd LIKE to see succeed without fear that you'll be the only one contributing, and the thing will never actually happen.

So anyway, I put my 16 words together and posted them as instructed, then watched the updates (some of which are private, and only visible to supporters). I spouted off on twitter and facebook, encouraging people to check the project out (and some of you did thank you very much), then one day, out of the blue, pesi, the artist, sent me an email thanking me for being such a vocal supporter of the endeavor.

He said he'd be posting an update in the near future and that I should keep my eye out for it. Sure enough, he did a slide show type movie of one of the 5x5 paintings as he was creating it... and it was one of my words. :)

I still really don't know why I'm so gung ho on this project, but I am. I think it's awesome, and I think it's a great way to support art in an individual way. For $10 or for $160, it's awesome. And you eventually will get the painting(s) that your word(s)/phrase(s) inspire(s).

So even if you don't have $10 to spare, go look at the project. And if you happen to know someone who DOES have a tenner lying around, send the link to them.
