It took me a very long time to understand why everyone LOVES my parents so much. I think I finally got it, though.
I look at others, and the relationships they have with their biological family, and I realize just how lucky I am. I was blessed with two supportive parents who encouraged me in everything I perused. No matter what I did, or how well I did it, there was never really an unkind work. Advice? Sure. But nothing other than encouragement. Even when I failed, it was encouragement to try again.
I was exposed to art and music and theater from a very young age. Everyone always commented on how mature my sister and I were, but that's because my parents treated us like adults, and expected us to act like adults -- so we did.
My parents were always giving. When they did something, it was never self serving. They have never done something just to be recognized or just to get credit for it. They have given the shirts off their backs to friends in need. They take in the strays (people and pets) and care for them like they were family.
Everyone says that we're doomed to become our parents.
Know what? If I turn out to be half as amazing as my parents, I'll still be one hell of a human being.
The best of both worlds
