The conundrum comes in once you're performing, though.
Audition = LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT WHAT I CAN DO! I'M AWESOME!!!
Good Improv = Look at us. See what we can do. I don't stand out any more than anyone else, and honestly, if I'm doing my job right, I'm making everyone ELSE look better.
So where do you draw that line between doing what you're supposed to do at an audition, and doing no disservice to your craft?
Le sigh.
Callbacks tonight were fun. They're always fun. But I fear that I may have taken my supportive role too seriously tonight. If a scene didn't need me, I didn't go in, but instead waited for the moment to necessitate it. During songs, I was courteous and kept my verses short (as short as the pattern set by the first singer). And as such, there wasn't much spotlight time for me tonight.
Now, if I actually did as good a job as I think I did, that shouldn't matter. The directors should be able to see the skillz there... but it's an audition, and they're watching 10 people, so subtle doesn't always equal good.
So who knows. Supposedly we'll hear by the end of the weekend.
